History of the Brunswick Park Ladies

The Brunswick Park Ladies Cricket ClubBrunswick Park Ladies’ Cricket Club was formed in the season of 1981/1982.

Two clubs in the Pennant Grade, Northcote and South Yarra, were in danger of disbanding due to a lack of players. South Yarra’s captain Marg Jennings decided to approach former Australian captain and Northcote’s president at the time Una Paisley and propose a merger of the two clubs. This discussion prompted the formation of North Yarra.

When North Yarra first started, they played their home games at Holbrook Reserve. The ground was secured by George Jennings, who by all sources had contacts everywhere! His contacts at the local council ensured that the ladies played their home games at this ground. George Jennings (Marg’s father) was an avid supporter of Marg Jennings and whichever team she played with! His continued support of women’s cricket, and the club, led to his life membership at Brunswick Park Ladies’ Cricket Club.

Initially the club was known as North Yarra and it remained so-called for 3 years. Due to the ground being located in Brunswick there was mounting pressure from the council to change the name of the club and recognise the local area. At the risk of losing this excellent facility, North Yarra changed its name to Brunswick North Yarra.

Once again a lack of players saw two clubs struggling in the Pennant Grade, North Yarra, captained by Marg Jennings, and Victoria Park, captained by Lyn Denholm. These two clubs merged and became Brunswick Park Ladies’ Cricket Club, as we know it today. This merger occurred in the season of 1981/1982 and the club has not looked back in the past 20 years.

During this time the Pennant/District Firsts Grade has played in every final series bar 2 years and won 10 premierships. The Pennant Reserve/District Seconds Grade has played in 26 final series and won 15 premierships. The A Grade teams have played in 7 final series and won 1 premiership. The B Grade teams have played in 1 final series. The One Day Competition has played in 6 final series and won 3 premierships. Our under 17 Grade has played in 6 Grand Finals and won 2 premierships. This success equates to a total of 29 senior premierships and 2 junior premierships.

In July 2014 the Brunswick Park Ladies amalgamated with the Prahran Cricket Club and from 2014/15 will play as the Prahran Cricket Club in the Womens Premier Cricket Competition.
