Vale Colin Hyland
Date of Event Prahran Cricket Club : Mon Oct 11, 2021 11:47AM

It is with deep regret that we note the passing of former premiership player and Hall of Fame inductee, Colin Hyland, who died on October 9
aged 92.

Col joined our club in season 1948/49, with cap number 258, and played 123 First Eleven games before seeking a captain/coach career at the end of 1958/59.

An important member of the First Eleven premiership in 1954/55, Col was a classy right hand top order batsman making 2,596 runs at 20.76, including four centuries and seven fifties. He took 46 wickets at 19.63 bowling left arm orthodox plus 60 catches. He still holds the club First Eleven record for catches in a season with 19 catches in 1957/58, since equalled by David Hussey.

Players back in Col’s era have often described him as an outstanding all-round fieldsman. He more than "held-his-own" in an era dominated by the likes of Sam Loxton, Bruce Murray, Val Holten, John Power and Don Mathieson.

Col also had the honour of representing both Victoria and Australia in baseball while his other long time cricket love, the Ormond Cricket Club, saw him play in six senior premiershipsincluding four as captain.

He played 271 First Eleven matches for Ormond and was a dominant figure with both bat and ball, scoring 7,301 runs and taking 545 wickets.

Off the field he was the Ormond club treasurer for a decade from the mid-1960s and the club auditor for some time after that.

Col was inducted into the Prahran Cricket Club Hall of Fame in 2001, a distinction he was also awarded by the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, while the Ormond Cricket Club inducted Col as one of their inaugural Club Legends in 2017. A truly wonderful achievement!

He was awarded Life Membership to both Ormond and the VSDCA in recognition of his outstanding contribution both on and off the field.

Right up to March of this year Col was a regular attendee at Toorak Park for our senior ‘home’ games. He loved talking to former and current players and officials and, in particular, thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon tea provided! He had a quick and dry wit and was an astute reader of the game of cricket.

Col certainly had a 2021 cricket and football season that he immensely enjoyed. Prahran winning the summer version plus his Demons winning the winter sport!!

The Prahran Cricket Club extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to Col’s wife Norma, son Stephen, daughters Kim and Tracey together with their respective families. He will always be fondly remembered.

RIP
