An uncle, Rod Huckett, had been a frontline suburban player at East Sandringham, Shane Warne’s first club.
“I knew of his doings but played mainly because that’s what my mates were doing too,” said Huckett.
Having initially played in the thirds and fourths at Prahran, he made it through to the firsts, aged 17, after just three second XI games. Last summer he took a career-best 8-76 against Northcote as well as playing for a Victorian XIII against the touring New Zealanders.
This year he has been playing at Cricket Australia Cup level and impressing with his allround skills, especially his ability to move the ball away from the right-handers.
He says his ability to bowl an outswinger is all due to his old Under 12s coach Ken Dunn, one of St Brigids’ playing legends.
“Kenny’s son, Matt and I used to open the bowling in the Under 12s,” he said. “Kenny played for years at St Brigids in an era when the senior team won a host of premierships.
“(Victorian squad teammate) Allan Wise is also an old St Brigids’ boy, though he is four or five years older than me.”
