CLUB GREATS

Source(http://www.theage.com.au

Our special guest for the first of our interviews with some of the more experienced players and long term supports and members is none other than Julien Wiener. Julien is currently captain of our second eleven, where he acts as a mentor to our up and coming players. Since return to the club Julien has taken the second eleven from the traditionally low ladder finisher’s to grand finalists last season.

Julien’s credentials are far more impressive than captain of the Prahran 2nds. He has played in and captained the first eleven at Prahran, captained the Northcote first eleven to a premiership, as well as representing Victoria in 66 first class matches, and 27 List A matches (One day), and more impressively again, Australia in 6 test matches and 7 one day internationals. (more details at http://www.cricinfo.com)

Despite these great achievements Julien is still an approachable, enthusiastic, keen cricketer who has been able to fit in with the younger guys at the club and really earn the respect of every single player. The Sledger’s Chris Garcia sat down with the great man to find out a little more about him.

CG. How long have you been associated with Prahran?

JW. Man and boy for 30 years

CG. What role/roles have you had at Prahran?

JW. Player and more recently WOP (Wiley Old Pro)

CG. What is the most memorable moment you have had at the club?

JW. Batting at the other end when D.W.Whatmore destroyed many a district bowling attack! How easy does it get when he was going! The other one would be seeing the development of the many talented young players we’ve got. Seeing them get the best out of themselves and reach the heights they want to.

CG. Who is the person you have met at Prahran that stands out the most in your memory and why?

JW. More than one.

Bob Parish-an outstanding administrator with a passion for Prahran Cricket Club.Didn’t matter if there was a test match or shield game being played. Bob would always watch his beloved Prahran.

Sam Loxton-A giant of the game. Articulate. Strong. You must be able to learn something from a man who had played cricket successfully with Sir Donald Bradman. D.W.N.Jukes. Club person without peer. What does he ever miss to do or forget? Where would we be without him?

Ian Crawford. 1 of 2 presidents I have had at Prhran.Has there ever been a better speech maker in any situation to any audience? And without notes! And by the way, many years ago he took 10 wickets in an innings in the 4th XI! ─

John Malligan My first captain at Prahran. Wonderful club person still involved in the game. Could bowl. Could bat. How fortunate could one club to have this loyal and hard-working individual spanning many many years??

And finally. D.F Whatmore and family. Wonderful people and Dav was the most perceptive and intelligent captain played with and if there was ever a better slip fielder where is he? And by the way, before Dav hurt his arm he was a gully and backward point fielder the equal of any you see on the TV today!

CG. Boxers or briefs?

JW. Briefs. Boxers allow too much freedom of movement for my liking. Know what I mean Clarkey?!

CG. If you could have your Prahran time again would you change anything?

JW.Listening to people who knew more about the game than I did. But as a young person we all know it all straight away!!!!

CG. In your time at Prahran have there been any other presidents other than Ian Crawford?

JW.Yes. Bob Parish. Always had the game of cricket close to his heart and hardly ever missed a Prahran game. Took a lot of pride in presenting first gamers in the 1st XI with their club badge.

CG. How many more years of presidency do you think crawf has left in him?

JW. Many. When will he ever run out of speeches!

CG. Has crawf ever told you it is “magnificent to see you”?

JW. NO, not yet. But I know he’ll get me. By the way, does anyone else have trouble getting a word in!!! Only kidding Oysters!

CG. Does life imitate are art or does art imitate life?

JW. Deep and meaningful, that one. My view is that the latter is true. We are all in control of the things we do and say and then let those long haired, unemployed artists make of it what they will!!

Thanks for your time Julien. It is really great to have you back at Prahran, all the blokes love having you around and listening to your stories about the “good old days”. I can’t believe you have managed to be here 30 years without Crawf saying “magnificent to see you” it is a near impossibility…you haven’t been deliberately avoiding him have you? Thanks again mate!
