Prahran Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the passing last weekend of former Australian, Victorian, and Brunswick Park Ladies player, Julie Calvert.

Julie passed away on 30 August following a brief illness; she was 61 years old.

Julie's club career began in the VWCA Pennant competition with Victoria Park in the 1980/81 season.

Following their merger with Brunswick North Yarra in 1981/82, she played the rest of her club cricket, including a stint as club captain, with the new Brunswick Park Ladies, before they too merged with Prahran in 2014.

Julie's passion for cricket inspired everyone around her. She was a highly gifted cricketer, a true all-rounder whose First XI record speaks for itself:

  • 261 matches

  • 7,369 runs at 37.98 average

  • 147* highest score

  • 50 wickets at 14.92 average

  • 179 catches and 26 stumpings

Her fine career is also recognised by Cricket Victoria and she was inducted into the CV 200 Club in 2022/23.

Julie's talent was recognised in the 1986/87 season when she was selected as Victorian cap #152, and she played 75 matches for Victoria over the next decade. This resulted in 1,537 runs at a 26.05 average, including five half-centuries and a top score of 66. She also bagged 37 catches and 13 stumpings along the way.

National representation beckoned in 1993 and 1994, and she made her debut in the Australian Women's ODI team as cap #70, making her debut as a wicketkeeper-batter against the West Indies at Turnbridge Wells during the 1993 Women's World Cup.

Julie is a life member of the Prahran Cricket Club and a triple club First XI record-holder for matches played, most career runs, and runs scored in a season.

She leaves a legacy we will continue to celebrate every season with the Julie Calvert Medal, awarded to our Women's Club Champion. She loved attending this event to personally hand out 'her medal' to the next generation of champions.

We’ll miss her kindness, talent, and friendship.

Our sincere condolences to the Calvert family.

Vale Julie!
